Dawn chorus
Issue 1 (November 2007) As the first rays of light break the horizon, the gates of Sossusvlei National Park open and a few cars trickle through.

ImageIt’s 4.30am and in the dim light their passengers can barely trace the outline of the towering dunes around them. They park at the bottom of one and clamber to the top, each footstep breaking the immaculate knife edge of sand that has been carved overnight by the wind. At the top they watch as the sun rises and the dunes slowly start to glow the colour of hot coals. For many it’s a moment they will always remember. The vast sea of dunes appears constantly to change; minute by minute, as the sun chases away the shadows, and hour by hour, as the wind whips up the sand and shifts the dunes’ elegant curves.
